Duncan Campbell estate letters, 1805-1846 (bulk 1805-1822).

Laurence Berry and his son Laurence W. Berry write to John Campbell from Port Royal, Fredericksburg, and King George County, Va., regarding debts of American citizens to the estate of Duncan Campbell, a London merchant. The letters recount efforts over 40 years to obtain payment of debts owed to Campbell at the time of the Revolutionary War and explain the progress of the claims through the courts. Topics include negotiations of prior agents Thomas Hodge and John Rose, land sales in Kentucky and Ohio, the farm economy, the death of the senior Berry and his son's assumption of the role of agent. The collection concludes with two letter, 1846-1847, from John Scott to Duncan Campbell's grandson and solicitors regarding the death of Laurence W. Berry and Scott's efforts to settle the remaining business.
